A History of Education

For more than 40 years, the Traffic Improvement Association of Michigan (TIA) has created and hosted numerous traffic safety education programs.  These programs include:

  • Marketing materials to improve safety belt use and reduce drunk driving.
  • Special educational programs for school officials (bus drivers, transportation supervisors, etc.), community officials (councils, boards, committees, etc.), and the public (service clubs, private organizations, etc.)
  • Educational programs to help improve the collection and distribution of accurate and timely traffic crash data by law enforcement officials.
  • Information and supporting "sobriety courts."
  • Providing "Traffic Fact Sheets" that explain technical traffic topics in non-technical terms.

TIA developed one of the first safety belt marketing campaigns, which was used by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) in 1969. "It's lock it to me time" safety belt campaign was very successful.

In addition, TIA played a strong role at the state level to support the primary safety belt and the 0.08 BAC laws. In 2008, Michigan reached a 97.2 percent safety belt use rate, which was the highest in the nation for 2008.

Remembering Ally: Distracted Driving Awareness Campaign

The "Remembering Ally: Distracted Driving Awareness Campaign" was created in memory of Ally Zimmerman, a 16-year-old Oakland County resident and Romeo High School student, who was hit by a distracted driver on December 28, 2010.  She later died from her injuries.  More than twenty law enforcement agencies are participating in this effort, in addition to numerous high school and college students, concerned citizens and businesses, and members of Ally's family.  The campaign includes the development of posters, a TV public service announcement, a mock distracted driving crash video, and a multimedia presentation.  These materials will be available to high schools, colleges/universities, and law enforcement agencies in Michigan beginning in late February of 2012.  They will also be available nationally through the TIA website, and promoted on social media sites.  Presentations will be given, in partnership with law enforcement agencies, at high schools and colleges/universities.  A public forum was held on May 2, 2011, and there were more than one hundred attendees present.  Several TV news crews also attended the event, which helped to further the safety message.
