A Proud History
Since 1967, the Traffic Improvement
Association of Michigan (TIA) has made the availability of
accurate and timely traffic crash data a high
priority. With the advancement of
computerized technology, TIA has made
considerable progress. In 2009, TIA
upgraded its Traffic Crash Analysis Tool (TCAT).
The new version of TCAT provides increased
speed, better accuracy, and a number of
additional features that enhances the user's
ability to to promote traffic safety in
Michigan. TCAT further demonstrates TIA's
ongoing commitment to reduce human and economic
losses caused by traffic crashes, and improve
mobility in Michigan.
TCAT uses traffic crash data from the State of
Michigan, which is derived from the Michigan
Traffic Crash Report form (UD-10). This
form is completed by all Michigan law
enforcement agencies for every reportable
traffic crash occurring in the state. TCAT
receives a weekly update of data from the State
of Michigan, which guarantees that TCAT users
are able to analyze the most, current,
up-to-date crash data. TCAT crash data is
available for the entire State of Michigan, and
contains data from 2000 to present.
No personal data is contained in the TCAT
statewide crash database, and there is no way to
view personal information on any TCAT report.
About TCAT
TCAT is a comprehensive, web-based traffic
crash analysis program for the detailed study of
traffic crashes at any location within the state
of Michigan. TCAT is coordinated and
funded by TIA, and the computer programming duties are
conducted by Midwestern Software Solutions
(MS2). MS2, which is based in Ann Arbor,
developed TCAT based on the expert advice of
TIA’s traffic engineer and the Road Commission
for Oakland County.
TCAT includes the following components:
- Searching for crash locations or crash specific data.
- Viewing crash statistics.
- Interacting with the map to obtain detailed crash statistics.
- Creating reports of crash statistics.
- Creating new crash locations.
- Collision diagrams (a graphical drawing, which further illustrates the crash patterns evident at various intersections).
- UD-10 report images.
Filtering Capability
TCAT provides an extensive filtering
capability so that users can create their
own unique traffic crash reports. TCAT
provides the user with numerous data fields
to pick from and create their own specific
reports. Some of the data items that can be
selected are:
- Alcohol/drug use
- Day of week
- Driver condition
- Hazardous action
- Injury type
- Lighting
- Occupant age
- Position in vehicle
- Restraint use
- Road area
- Road condition
- Time of day
- Traffic control
- Type of crash
- Type of vehicle
- Vehicle activity prior to crash
- Weather
How to Get Access
TCAT is available to TIA's member communities at no cost. Engineering firms are able to purchase an annual membership for a fee.

Available Reports
The following is a synopsis of a few reports that are available on TCAT:
- Intersection Crash Report: Summary data of each crash at a user-selected intersection with the ability to create a collision diagram and mapping of these crashes. The user has the ability to produce reports based on extensive filtering of specific crash data.
- Link Crash Report: Summary data of each traffic crash on a user-selected road segment with the ability to map these crashes. The user has the ability to produce reports based on extensive filtering of specific crash data.
- Community Crash Report: Summary data of each traffic crash within a selected county, or community within any county. The user has the ability to produce reports based on extensive filtering of specific crash data.
- Intersection Ranking Report: Ranking report of intersections within a selected county or community within any county. The user has the ability to produce reports based on extensive filtering of specific crash data.
- Intersection Ranking Weighted Report (TIA member communities in Oakland County only at this time): Ranking report of major intersections within a selected community weighted by crash frequency, injury severity, and crash rate. The user has the ability to produce reports based on extensive filtering of specific crash data.
- Link Ranking Report: Ranking report of major road segments within a selected community. The user has the ability to produce reports based on extensive filtering of specific crash data.
- Link Weighted Report (TIA member communities in Oakland County only at this time): Ranking report of major road segments in a community weighted by crash frequency, injury severity, and crash rate. The user had the ability to produce reports based on extensive filtering of specific crash data.
- Monthly Crash Summary Report: Summary report of injury traffic crashes and occupant injuries for a user-selected county or community within any county.
